This article will guide you through setting up a L2TP VPN type on the Route10.
Note that at the time of this writing (October 23rd, 2024), L2TP VPN types may not be supported on all client devices
Setting up the Route10 (Server)
Any item denoted with an asterisk (*) is something you will need to set up a client, please take note of these items
- Start at the Network tab at manage.alta.inc
- Click on the icon of the Route10, this will bring up the Route10 configuration pane
- Click the Auth tab
- Toggle Enable
- Click the Add User Button
- Provide a username* and password* and click Save
- After saving, note that the Users box is now populated with your username
- Click the VPN tab
- For IPSec Server, click the Open button
- Click Enable to ensure it’s toggled on
- Provide a PSK*, which is essentially a password
- Provide a subnet that does not exist on your network yet, this is the subnet that VPN clients will be assigned
- Provide at least one DNS server that you’d like to provide to the clients
- Click Save
- Obtain your WAN/ISP IP address*
- To do this, go to the Network tab and mouse over your Route10’s IP address
- Note that if your WAN IP starts with any of the following, your ISP’s connection is not suitable for incoming VPN connections
- 10.x.x.x
- 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x
- 192.168.x.x
- 100.64.x.x through 100.100.127.x.x
- To do this, go to the Network tab and mouse over your Route10’s IP address
Setting up the Client
Unfortunately, there are many different client configurations and terminologies may not match.
Here are some common alternative terms for the 4 main components that are required from the above Server Setup
WAN IP (Step 10a)
- Server Name
- Server IP
Username (Step 6)
- This is almost universally referred to as “username”
Password (Step 6)
- This is almost universally referred to as “password”, not to be confused with “secret”
Secret (Step 9b)
- PSK
