What is mDNS?
mDNS (Multicast DNS) is a network protocol that enables devices to discover services and resolve hostnames on a local network without needing a traditional DNS server. It uses multicast queries to broadcast and resolve names within a local network segment, allowing devices to find each other automatically.
Why Would I Use mDNS?
mDNS is especially useful in small networks where setting up a dedicated DNS server is impractical. One common use case is in home networks for devices like printers, smart TVs, and IoT devices to automatically discover and connect. Apple's Bonjour protocol, for instance, uses mDNS to simplify the discovery of devices like AirPrint printers or Apple TVs on a network. Other use cases include service discovery in offices, where devices such as network cameras, file servers, or media servers can be easily located by clients without manual configuration. mDNS is particularly helpful in environments where devices need to interact seamlessly without requiring complex network setups.
