SFP / SFP+ Module Compatibility

This article outlines supported SFP and SFP+ modules for Alta Labs equipment, including Ethernet optics, ONT SFP modules, and unsupported PON modules.

Alta Labs equipment supports standard Ethernet SFP and SFP+ modules operating at:

  • 1Gbps Ethernet

  • 10Gbps Ethernet

  • 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps Ethernet using NBASE-T RJ45 SFP+ modules only

Most standard Ethernet SFP and SFP+ modules should function without additional configuration.

Supported modules must operate as a standard Ethernet interface to the host device.

ONT SFP Modules (ONT-on-a-Stick)

Some ONT-style SFP modules, sometimes referred to as “ONT-on-a-stick,” internally terminate PON fiber and present a standard 1Gbps or 10Gbps Ethernet interface. Many of these modules function properly in Alta Labs equipment.

For best compatibility:

  • The module must operate as a standard Ethernet interface

  • Power consumption should ideally be under 2W

Because implementations vary by manufacturer, compatibility cannot be guaranteed.

PON Fiber SFP Modules

Native PON fiber SFP modules are not supported and will not function in Alta Labs equipment.

This includes GPON, XG-PON, and XGS-PON modules that require PON signaling between the host device and the optical network.

Alta Labs equipment does not provide PON OLT or ONT signaling functionality.

2.5Gbps support applies only to NBASE-T RJ45 Ethernet modules. It does not apply to 2.5Gbps GPON optical modules or other PON standards.

SFP Compatibility Database

Alta Labs maintains a public SFP/DAC compatibility database of tested and reported modules.

To search tested modules, view results, or submit a report:

The database reflects modules that have been tested or submitted by the community and is continuously expanding. If a module is not currently listed, this does not necessarily indicate incompatibility.

If you do not see your module listed, or if you experience issues with a module, please submit it for review or contact support@alta.inc with the manufacturer and model number.
