Dynamic DNS

What is Dynamic DNS?

Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is a method for ensuring that a memorable hostname always resolves to your WAN IP address. This is important for many home connections that host their own services such as a VPN endpoint with our Route10. The IP address to that connection may change periodically for a number of reasons, such as a power outage or ISP maintenance. With DDNS, that new address can be assigned to the name you registered every time it updates.

Enabling DDNS

By default, the Route10 sets up an automatically managed DDNS record in order to make the VPN and other tools as easy to use as possible. You can find this in the tooltip triggered by hovering your cursor over the IP address for your router as shown in the screenshot below.

Third-party DDNS

To use a custom DDNS provider, edit the WAN interface to find the Dynamic DNS client configuration.

Choose a provider from the list to get started. Your provider should provide some documentation to determine the correct values for the following settings.

In this example your DDNS hostname is myddns.example.com.

  • Hostname may be the fully qualified domain name (myddns.example.com), or just the base domain (example.com), depending on your provider.
  • Username may be the same as you use to login with your provider, or it could be the unqualified hostname (myddns). Your provider may clarify.
  • Password is defined with your provider. It may require you to generate a password, or they may provide a special token.
  • Public WAN IP discovers your public address by utilizing an internet-based check. This is useful to ensure that the updated DNS records point to your public IP in case your router WAN is on a private or CGNAT address.
  • IPv6 may be enabled to register an AAAA record with your IPv6 address. Otherwise, an A record is registered for IPv4.
