What Type of PoE Should I Use for the Access Points

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is a technology that allows both Power and Data to be shared over a single Ethernet cable. This allows for simpler installations only requiring a single cable to be installed for each AP.

Types of PoE

There are different types of PoE and a few standards used. We currently recommend PoE+ (a.k.a. 802.3at) adapters.

  • PoE Injectors (Adapters) are devices that you can use with a standard, non-PoE networking switch, that has its own AC plug/interface. With these small devices, you connect the PoE injector to your network with a standard Ethernet Cable, and from the PoE out port, connect your AP device.
  • PoE capable switches can be more convenient, and provide a cleaner installation experience. PoE switches allow to use a single cable connecting the switch and access point and don't require the need for additional PoE injectors or extra cabling.
