The Device Update Window settings allow you to control when firmware updates can be applied to devices at a site. You can specify both the time of day when updates may occur and, for automatic updates, the days of the week when they are allowed.
These settings can help prevent firmware updates from occurring during normal business hours or other periods when device availability is important.
Where to Find Device Update Settings
In the Alta Labs Controller, navigate to:
- Settings
- System
The following pertinent settings are available:
- Automatic Device Updates
- Device update window
- Device update days
Automatic Device Updates must be enabled for automatic firmware updates to use the configured update window and update days.
Device Update Window
Device update window specifies the start time of a one-hour period during which firmware updates may be applied to devices.
For example, if you select 4:30 AM, the update window is:
4:30 AM – 5:30 AM
Devices scheduled for an update will download and apply their firmware during this window. The exact update time is randomized within the selected one-hour period, so devices should not be expected to begin updating at the exact start time.
All update window times use the site timezone.
Default Update Window
If Device update window is left set to Default, the update window is:
3:00 AM – 4:00 AM
This matches the historical update behavior of the Alta Labs Controller.
Device Update Days
Device update days determines which days of the week automatic firmware updates are permitted to run.
You can select one or more days of the week.
For example, selecting:
Tuesday and Thursday
allows automatic firmware updates to occur only during the configured update window on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
All Days
Device update days is a multi-select field.
If no individual days are selected, the field displays:
All days
This allows automatic firmware updates to occur on any day of the week.
To return a custom day selection to All days, click the X next to each selected day. Once all selected days have been removed, the field will display All days.
Manual Updates Scheduled for Tonight
The selected Device update days apply only to automatic updates.
When you manually click the Upgrade button for a device and choose Tonight, the update will occur during the configured Device update window.
The selected Device update days are ignored for manual updates scheduled for Tonight.
For example, if:
- Device update window is set to 5:00 AM
- Device update days is set to Tuesday and Thursday
and you manually select Upgrade → Tonight on a Saturday, the device can still update during the 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM update window that night.
In other words, Device update window applies to both automatic updates and manual updates scheduled for Tonight, while Device update days restricts automatic updates only.
Configuration Examples
Default Behavior
The default configuration is:
- Device update window: Default
- Device update days: All days
With these settings, firmware updates:
- May occur on any day of the week
- Occur between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM
- Run at a randomized time within that one-hour window
- Use the site timezone
This is also the historical update behavior of the Alta Labs Controller. Unless a user changes the update window or selects specific update days, devices will continue to update using this schedule.
Example 1: Change the Update Time but Allow Any Day
Configuration:
- Device update window: 5:00 AM
- Device update days: All days
Automatic firmware updates may occur on any day of the week, but only during the:
5:00 AM – 6:00 AM update window.
Example 2: Restrict Updates to Specific Days
Configuration:
- Device update window: Default
- Device update days: Tuesday and Thursday
Automatic firmware updates may occur only on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the default:
3:00 AM – 4:00 AM update window.
Example 3: Set Both a Custom Time and Specific Days
Configuration:
- Device update window: 1:30 AM
- Device update days: Saturday and Sunday
Automatic firmware updates may occur only on Saturdays and Sundays between:
1:30 AM – 2:30 AM
The exact update time will be randomized within that one-hour window.
Example 4: Manually Schedule an Update for Tonight
Configuration:
- Device update window: 2:00 AM
- Device update days: Tuesday and Thursday
If you manually click Upgrade and select Tonight on a day other than Tuesday or Thursday, the device can still update between:
2:00 AM – 3:00 AM
The configured Device update days do not restrict manual updates scheduled for Tonight.
- Automatic Device Updates must be enabled to use automatic device update scheduling.
- Manual updates scheduled using Upgrade → Tonight follow the configured Device update window, but ignore the selected Device update days.
