WiFi Calling with Alta Labs

Quickstart

As a general rule, there are only 2 settings that are pertinent in order to support WiFi calling.

  1. Start by logging in to your account at https://manage.alta.inc, these settings are also available via the iOS and Android apps, the steps are the same
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Click on the relevant SSID
  4. Expand the Advanced settings menu at the bottom
  5. Locate the Fast Roaming toggle and ensure it is set to On (off by default)
  6. Locate the BSS Transition toggle and ensure it is set to On (on by default)
  7. Scroll to the bottom and click Save

What if these steps didn’t work?

These are the ideal configuration changes to make to set up your Alta WiFi to perform optimally for WiFi calling. Unfortunately, there are many variables that may still impact WiFi calling.  Some examples are:

  • Poor channel planning (self-interference)
  • External interference
  • Phone support
  • Carrier support
  • Physical position of the AP(s)
    • APs too close to each other
    • APs too far from each other
    • Given these two options, having the APs too close is preferred. The power output from the APs can always be tuned down to reduce overlap/interference, but they can only be turned up to a certain level

If you have troubleshot these steps and still encounter issues, please contact our technical support team.

I performed these steps and device(s) went offline

This can be expected and is also the reason we do not have Fast Roaming enabled by default.  Some older devices and certain IoT devices either don’t support or are not well supported with Fast Roaming enabled.

Fast Roaming is an SSID wide setting, so the simplest solution is to have an SSID with Fast Roaming disabled and create another SSID with Fast Roaming enabled.

  1. Fast Roaming enabled
  2. Fast Roaming disabled

When creating the alternative SSID, ensure that the SSID itself is unique. e.g. don’t have 2+ SSIDs that are identical.

Please also note that WiFi Calling should not be conflated with XNET, AltaBoost, WayFi, or any other Passpoint technology.  While WiFi Calling is included in the aforementioned services, WiFi Calling is less complicated and does not often require extra SSIDs.
