Vouchers

Alta Labs vouchers are a powerful and flexible tool for guest WiFi networks. Vouchers offer the ability to provide unique codes for each individual guest. You may also reuse the same voucher code repeatedly, depending on the voucher configuration.

Vouchers are a per-SSID setting so they can be applied on an SSID where other, more conventional AltaPasses are configured.

Accessing Vouchers

  1. Make sure you’re logged in to https://manage.alta.inc if you’re not already
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Go to WiFi
  4. Click your desired SSID
  5. Expand the Advanced Section
  6. Scroll to the Vouchers section

Voucher Configuration

In addition to the same capabilities of a standard AltaPass:

  • Profile
  • Network Type
  • VLAN
  • Download and Upload Rate Limitations
  • Subject to Hotspot rules
  • Subject to Schedule rules
  • Subject to Filter Rules
  • Ability to hide the password

You can also set:

  • Duration that the voucher is valid for
  • If the voucher is single or multi-use

Password/PSK Configurations

If your SSID uses Password(s) for security, a voucher acts as the WiFi password, otherwise known as a pre-shared key or “PSK” for short.

When you create a new voucher, the voucher code itself becomes the PSK, meaning that when a client wants to associate, they select your SSID and enter the voucher code as the WiFi password rather than any other Alta Pass configurations, if applicable. This also allows you to print a QR code of the SSID and password for seamless access to your guest WiFi network.

The behavior of vouchers for PSK mode varies depending on the Single Use setting. With Single Use vouchers, after the voucher has expired, the client will be redirected to a captive portal indicating that their voucher is no longer valid. When Single Use is not enabled, the PSK voucher will automatically refresh after the voucher duration, and it effectively becomes a normal WiFi password indefinitely.

Open Configurations

If your SSID has Open for its security, the user will be presented with a captive portal and be prompted for the voucher code. Vouchers codes when using Open security will require manual typing of the password, i.e. QR codes cannot be used to join the WiFi network.

The behavior of vouchers for Open security varies from Password security. If the voucher is Single Use and the voucher has expired, the user will be redirected to a captive portal where they can potentially enter another voucher code. If the voucher is not Single Use, then the user can potentially enter the same voucher code again, and be authorized for another configured duration of time.

Profiles

You can think of Profiles as a template of settings. Profiles can be assigned to vouchers for a substantially faster approach to adding vouchers in bulk, while retaining a consistent configuration across all vouchers that were created in bulk.

Please see our Profiles article to learn more about creating profiles.

Bulk Voucher Creation

Before creating vouchers in bulk, it is recommended to create the desired profile(s) first. Please see Please see our Profiles article to learn more about creating profiles.

Once your profile(s) have been created:

  1. Click Add Voucher (Multiple)
  2. Select the number of vouchers you would like to create
  3. Select your desired profile
  4. Click Add Vouchers

Your vouchers will now be reflected under the Vouchers section. You may change anything you like about those vouchers prior to distributing them to guests, if needed.

Precedence

When a voucher is configured with both a Profile and additional settings in the configuration for the voucher (the settings below the Profile selector), any conflicting settings will defer to the voucher configuration pane, overriding the chosen Profile. Let’s use this screenshot as an example:

Now, 3 settings conflict between Voucher on the left and the Profile on the right.

  • VLAN
  • Download Rate
  • Upload Rate

In this case, provided nothing else is overridden, the VLAN will be 30 with a 150mbps download and a 150mbps upload.

Viewing Clients Connected via Vouchers

We are planning to enhance the Devices view of the controller, providing the ability to see what clients are connected to WiFi via vouchers. We do not have an ETA on the release of this addition at the time of writing this article.
